My best guess as to why this is happening is that the installer is unhappy with the fact that I'm using a 3rd party hard drive in my Macbook. So, I'm now stuck without an idea of what to do.

What did end up working was erasing the hard drive with Disk Utility and reinstalling an OS over the internet (I believe it went with Mavericks or Yosemite though I upgraded back to El Capitan thereafter). If it is 2009 or older, El Capitan is the newest OSX that will be compatible. In recovery mode, attempting to reinstall the OS returns an error of 'An error occurred while preparing the installation. A A1286 is a 15' MBP that can be from late 2008 through mid 2012.
